A God Unlike the World

“You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.”
—Psalm 139:1-6 🌿

These are words from David, the shepherd and king said to be after God’s own heart. A man who knew God intimately and, though imperfect in many ways, sought to live humbly under his mighty sovereignty.

I find comfort in these words, and comfort in God’s utmost knowledge of, and care for, those he creates. I also find safety in knowing his pure heart and gracious stewardship of that knowledge. His heart towards us is so kind and untainted by evil; so free of manipulation, deceit, or cunning. He knows all—the good and the bad— yet does not bend it towards his good and our evil, but rather towards our good and his glory. How refreshing this is, in a world where the status quo is exploitation at the expense of the weak, and gain at the expense of personal integrity.

God knows our fragile hearts. Yet he continually hopes for our utmost good and wholeness.

Praise him, for being so unlike the world, in oh so many ways.
